About Stars & Stripes... The boat "Stars & Stripes" was commissioned in 1983 by BYC member Bill Martain, it is the "original" Stars & Stripes. It was the 1984 Canada's Cup Challenger. In 1987 Denis Connor asked for the right to use the name in his American's Cup Challange. The boat was designed by Nelson Marek and sail by both Bruce Nelson and Bruce Marek. It was built by Cookson in New Zealand. In 2021 current owner, and BYC member, Daniel Mercier purchased the boat that was located in Newport RI, transported it back to the Great Lakes and had it restored from the keel to the masthead. He and his crew are excited to be racing this historic boat in the Mackinaw race.
