Marmalade (USA 42082) |

Marmalade (USA 42082)
|
8:29 PM Marmalade heard the Mayday call from Windseeker III that they had lost their rudder. USCG asked how many souls (7) and GPS coordinates (43 32.216 82 32.047), and asked any vessels in the area to provide assistance. The crew of Marmalade remembered that Windseeker was one of the last vessels we crossed tacks with, though the timing was at least 1hr. Given the sea-state and the potential for water egress, Maramalde hailed Windseeker via VHF and asked if they needed Marmalade to responded or standby. This was confirmed, so Marmalade stopped racing, marked their GPS location, and steamed towards the coordinates provided. By the Time the renter, the GPS, marmalade realized they were one hour away, but without confirmation the situation on Windseeker III despite attempts to reach them via cell phone, Maramalde continued in the abundance of caution to protect the worst-case scenario. It wasn't until 1hr-15min that WSIII advised they were under power and had arrangements to get into Port Sanilac. Marmalafe revsersed course, returned to her GPS spot, and made ready to sail. After sails were set, Marmalade returned to those coordinates a second time and resumed racing at 12:59am Sunday. We don't expect a redress to change finishing postion, it believe the integrity of the sport that a crew should be returned the time they spend responding to Mayday and distress calls. We ask PC/RC to grant Mamalade her 4hr20min to elapsed time, or whatever PC deems reasonable for time and physical exhaustion of going dead-down wind/wave and then back up-wind/wave to stand-by in-addition to completing the race. Thank you for considerstion. |
